The Joy of Learning Violin as an Adult

There's something magical about the sound of a violin. After years of being a devoted music listener, I finally decided to become a creator.

Why Violin?

Growing up, I was always drawn to Indian classical music. The violin, with its ability to mimic the human voice, felt like the perfect instrument for expressing the nuances of ragas and thillanas.

The Beginner's Mind

Starting as an adult learner is humbling. Those first sounds? Let's just say my family was very patient.

But there's beauty in being a beginner:

  • No ego - You can ask "silly" questions
  • Appreciation - You truly understand the skill of masters
  • Patience - You learn at your own pace

The Connection to Thillanas

I mentioned in my bio that thillanas are my current obsession. These rhythmic compositions in Carnatic music are perfect for violin practice:

  • Complex rhythmic patterns
  • Melodic phrases that challenge finger positioning
  • Beautiful bow work opportunities

Lessons Beyond Music

Learning violin has taught me things that apply everywhere:

  1. Consistency beats intensity - 20 minutes daily is better than 3 hours weekly
  2. Embrace the plateau - Progress isn't always visible
  3. Find joy in the process - The destination is never the point

What's Next?

My goal isn't to perform on stage (though who knows?). It's to create music that moves me, even if I'm the only audience.

If you've been thinking about learning something new - do it. The best time to start was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.
